The original intention to make this page the REAL streaming archive of the seminars/salons/workshops sort of fell by the wayside.. too much else to preoccupy the raggletaggle mixture of people who did or didn’t come. we had endless problems with archiving directly to disc on the PC.. sometimes files got overwritten, sometimes just archived black for 6 hours etc.. and the quality of the real stream was pretty blocky.. so in the end we left only one real archive up..(as a marker).. its ongoing anyway, so for now we’ve just compressed some of the streams from the master mix and put them up as progressive download QTs.. in principle each Wednesday’s output is archived to tape with a general mix and 2 separate cameras.. the idea being that they can be edited and recomposited or overwritten, used in their turn as background, at a later date.. we’ve just compressed the uncut mix as it came out.. complete with bananities, inanities, profanities and an occasional idea.... at times we were privileged to welcome both well and unknown guests… these were generally more interesting than trying to make sense of the rambling waffle of ol’ anchor man river, david larcher.. he who does not know..See for yourselves..
Although at first we intended to put the complete seminars up.. due to questions of space some of them have been cut down.. each has its length, size and data rate .. altogether there are about 12 hours up from over 100..at the settings we generally use an hour (12gig) compresses to about 350mb... looking ahead, we plan to go through the tapes over the next 5 years.. shrinking the whole back into the smallest possible datastream and compressing each session down to the analytic hour.. difficult to predict who’ll be speaking by then but since the tapes take up too much space already and the task of the archivist is an unenviable one, we thought we could emulate Life a User’s Manual (George Perec) and eventually wipe out the record.. practically demonstrating that its the process that counts.. the reversible seminar.. erasure, time shifted trap door procedures, the message laid to rest in an array.. caught like a neutrino.. on the tip of the olde merlin’s pike.. noone’s yet inscribed a logo on one of those..
In Julian Brown’s fascinating book on the search for the Quantum computer.. we read.
.
......Landauer's argument was that by analogy computation might need to involve heat dissipation only when you did something irreversible with the information. Furthermore he showed that the only processes that were irreversible in a computation were those in
which informnation was discarded. The role of erasure was a fundamentally new idea... At first sight his idea, now known as Landauer's principle , was counter intuitive,... (minds, machines and the multiverse.... julian brown.. p.50)

after compressing these things on a G4 powerbook we know exactly the problem..
transforming past trivia (garbage) takes a lot more effort than creating a present tense.. one should help the poor processors by keeping them on one’s lap and acting like a heatsink.. slave to the machine.. so much for progress.. but it’s the first steps towards the implant.. the wearable computer that wears you..

... it later became apparent that a Belgian mathematician, Yves Lecerf, had advanced the notion of a reversible computing machine as early as 1963.. his paper went almost unnoticed for many years, probably because it was in french..

just to be fair and in order to qualify as European .. (grants etc) a friend sent me this

… one of the more pluperfect aspects of a tele presence is that its presence need take up no material space.. its seat of consciousness is in the carpark next that old you.. zoo-fall in the noo-sphere

all being well, we’ll soon be beaming into our virtual studio from cyber antartica looking at those old pictures of a few lightyears ago.. can’t remember where exactly but in the english translation Faust looking at his old professor through the window says
“strive on for ever til you ache
your patchworks and mosaics make
with scraps at others banquets found
a ragout of your own compound,
and sitting at your asheap fan
what miserable flame you can..”

enjoy the ragout du jour while you can.. because the virgins of part 2 will probably be “gnadenloss”

COMING SOON! .. 2001-2006
